DFI- DEALING WITH DATA- WEEK 4
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
SHARE- TOHATOHA:
There are many ways of sharing and it has been happening for a very long time. I love the idea of sharing because being a second language learner Think, Pair, Share is a strategy we often use to encourage the learning of a new language. The sharing progression from face to face, to a group and to a class is important in building confidence in learning a new language so seeing this encouraged in Manaiakalani is awesome!
Social Media is a platform that has had a huge impact on sharing throughout the world and with a wider audience. Sharing online was something Manaiakalani realised that motivates and encourages learners to produce work in order to share to an authentic audience and with a purpose. I totally agree with this! When students understand that there is a purpose to why they are creating something, they specifically create and share their work to engage to that audience.
Blogger is a platform that is used in Manaiakalani to share their learning. I believe that through blogging, this is a way to encourage 'Share to complete their learning'. It definitely motivates students to finish their work because they look forward to receive feedback/reply from audience. In saying this, feedback is just as important when student work is shared so making sure students receive feedback to maintain that motivation to create more work to share. I am really looking forward to introducing and using blogging with my class.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
GOOGLE MY MAPS:
This is something I really loved learning about today. I really want to build my confidence in using this so I can implement into my teaching and learning more. This term for Maths our strand we are focussing on Measurement and I instantly thought of how this app can be utilised well with creating some engaging problems for students. I guess over time I will be a pro on my maps lol! Below is something I managed to create with My Maps and just identifying important places in my community that could possibly be useful for students.
GOOGLE SHEETS:
I had learnt some awesome functions to use with data on Sheets. I haven't really used sheets for data but I can start using this for student and self assessment. I like how it also has checkbox that can help me see which students need to be assessed. The use of insert graph was a great visual and as well as conditional formatting with adding a rule for changes to be automatically made. You can never go wrong with shortcuts so it was good to learn a few more shortcuts to add to my kete such as =sparkline. Below are 2 tasks we were given to create. The first task is on Google Sheets with trialling functions and tools that we learnt and the other create is around analysing blog posts with sheets transferred onto Google Draw. I had analysed blog post comments of a student named AJ from Glenbrae School and it was a good way to put into practice the functions we were taught today.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners, how could they use it?
GOOGLE FORMS:
I have used Google Forms before but mainly for team meetings. However, today I am encouraged to utilise this app more with my learners. I feel I could use this as a way to check in and assess what students have learnt so far as well as use this for fun tasks such as a class quiz. Schonell Spelling (what Jeremy had shared) is something I would love to trial with my class. Spelling is an area that is definitely needed in my class and sometimes I find it hard to fit into our weekly timetable so having this set up for students to independently assess themselves and receive immediate feedback and results is awesome! Looking forward to create more with this app. Below is a short quiz I quickly created around Samoa general knowledge.
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
HAPARA:
Accessing student blogs and posts on here just makes things much more easier to check in on what they have post. Hovering over and seeing their posts was also cool learning for me! I haven't started blogging with my class yet but I can't wait for them to start sharing their learning on their blogs and just having an authentic audience to share to. Even though this will take a while to get into but after today's kaupapa around Share I do understand the impact blogging has on our tamariki's learning.
Something I do want to try and use more to help with workflow is the use of google forms together with google sheets. By creating assessment on Google Forms and transferring it to Google Sheets will help me utilise Google Sheets more to analyse student data. Don't know how this will look but it will definitely be something I can inquire into for the year and see how it goes😊
Ka pai Gillian. Thanks for sharing this great range of creations from today. I agree that blogging is much a great way of sharing but that we need to make sure students are getting comments. I'm still buzzing from my score on your Google Form. It will be great to see how your students go with it. See you next week.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Gillian,
ReplyDeleteGreat that your could instantly see how you might use MyMaps with your learners in Measurement. Your form was great - had to think! Only thing was I got 0/0 even though answers were right! Here is how to assign points
Ngā mihi,
Maria
